General Description Belize is a rural country with a slowly growing economy.  Other than Belize City (pop. 90,000), the largest communities in the country are about 15,000 people.  Belizeans are a laid back people with a low-key demeanor.  One of the greatest problems Belize faces in the 21st century is suffering from "brain drain."  Many of the best and brightest young Belizeans go on to further schooling abroad and never return to Belize. Many mission teams serve in Belize….PPM alone will bring nearly 100 groups to Belize in 2008.  Tourism is the largest industry in Belize, followed by citrus fruits and timber exports. To the short-term mission participant, Belize will appear quite rural and undeveloped, even compared to Jamaica.

Jamaica has a much higher population density.  Kingston has about 1 million inhabitants, and there are numerous other cities with 50,000-250,000 people.  Jamaicans are a group of people with a strong sense of independence. Jamaica is world famous for its reggae music, jerk chicken, and producing some of the world's fastest sprinters. One of Jamaica's greatest problems is integrating tourism with the local culture.  Jamaica's large beach resorts employ large numbers of people, but also create an environment of the "have's" vs. the "have not's."  Some areas (West and South Coasts) are working to make tourism, the largest industry, a more cooperate effort. To the short-term mission participant, Jamaica will appear very developed in some areas (mostly coastal), but it also has many rural areas in addition to grinding poverty in urban areas.
