We Have Arrived
by Amy Davis
June 24, 2012 at 09:41 PM

After a long night of traveling, the team made their arrival into Montego Bay mid-morning. They were able to enjoy a delicious lunch at Scotchies, (delicious Jamaican jerk chicken) followed by a trip down to Old Harbour where they will spend the week. The team, although tired has been in amazing spirits and immediately joined in with the other teams. This evening we participated in a church service that was filled with testimonies, dancing and singing. Once again the team got right in there and shared two inspiring testimonies and met several of the church members at Old Harbour Bay Baptist Church.

We all look forward to getting some rest tonight and jump-starting the day tomorrow with devotions at the local primary school, a service project and a sports camp in the pm.

Thank you in advance for prayers for our team as we begin our adventure and begin to see what God has in store for us.

Sports Evangelism

After getting some much needed rest, the team dove right into leading devotionals at Old Harbour Bay Primary School. Pastor Ken lead the morning with a very entertaining song and devotional about working hard as you are working for the Lord.

Directly after devotionals we headed to a local couple's house to paint the exterior and interior of their house. We were blessed by conversations we had with the couple and were able to learn a little more about the husband's Rastafarian beliefs. Some of our team also played a game of Cricket with some local boys and enjoyed meeting some people in the community.

In the afternoon we were surprised by having around a hundred participants in our sports camp. Although it was a little overwhelming, the students were thrilled to learn about American football and participate in the games. The afternoon was filled with lots of laughter and amazing opportunities to sow seeds of Christ's love in the children's lives.

After the camp we joined a few of the kids by walking over to where Old Harbour Bay is hosting a football ( aka American soccer) and watched part of the game. The team also got to connect with some of the local Jamaican men by playing a game of basketball.

We finished the day with worshiping together with the other 3 teams and are excited about the many opportunities that are surely to come this week.

Bonding

Today was an awesome day in many ways for the team. We got up super early to share devotions at Old Harbour Primary School and were greeted by many sweet faces and the children loved learning the song, "Hi, my name is Joe."

Soon after devotions we were off to the Golden Age Home that houses and cares for the elderly and homeless. It is a wonderful private organization and all the team walked away touched by the amount of care and concern the matron puts into caring for her residents.

After enjoying our time at GAH, we were off to May Pen Infirmary, a government funded organization that houses over 150 residents. Several of us were a little nervous about the experience, but as usual jumped right in despite any fears or reservations. We greeted residents, prayed and sang with them and also had the opportunity to pray for some of the staff.

In the afternoon we met up once again at the Harbour Bay Primary School to continue our Football camp. Once again we had around 100 participants and it was organized chaos filled with tons of fun. The team worked well to adapt to the numbers and found creative ways to share the gospel. Above all relationships were formed and fun was had by all.

Before dinner the guys headed over for another game of basketball with some of the local Jamaican men. It was a fun game to watch and amazing to witness the camaraderie and friendships being formed between the two cultures.

We continue to witness God's presence in our day to day activities and are already walking away with amazing testimonies of God's love.

Dream Team

June 27, 2012 at 11:20 PM

The “dream team” as we now refer to ourselves had yet again another awesome day. We started the day of by finishing a painting project. We enjoyed spending another morning in fellowship with the couple we were painting for and were blessed to have helped.

After painting we packed up and went to Sun Beam Children’s Home for young boys and enjoyed playing soccer, basketball and making necklaces with the students.

We were off almost immediately to start our next project; a chicken coup for a young mother who works at the church. The team worked hard in the hot sun to get the job off and running and we look forward to completing it tomorrow.

While a couple of our team stayed to work on the coup, the rest of the team completed a much more manageable day at football camp. The group has caused quite a stir in the community and will often be greeted by young children wherever we go. It’s amazing to see the impact ten people can make throughout an entire community.

We wrapped up the day with a game of basketball followed by a church service that the team lead. Pastor Ken gave an amazing sermon and many of us were left with a righteous conviction.

The team ended the night with spending some time in fellowship and reflecting on the great job and positive attitudes everyone has had. This truly is a great team that is a consistent reflection of Christ's love to the people in this community.

Final Ministry Day
by Amy Davis
June 29, 2012 at 06:42 AM

Today was a great way to end a week full of amazing ministry opportunities within Old Harbour Bay. Below are just a few of the highlights from the day.
1. We learned how to make a chicken coup Jamaican style and were able to finish a large majority of it all while maintaining a positive attitude.
2. The team visited downtown Old Harbour for a little shopping and visiting people within the community.
3. We had another successful afternoon at the football fields, playing with the local children.
4. The day finished with a few last games on the basketball courts. This has been by far one of the greatest outreach ministries we’ve done and has provided the team with an opportunity to share the gospel with several of the young men.
During this week the team has worked hard at every task at hand. They have maintained a positive attitude and above all have remembered the goal of sharing the gospel of Christ in love. Overall, it has been an incredibly blessed and definitely God ordained for each team member to have been here.

Ocho Rios
by Jon Nelson
June 30, 2012 at 12:16 AM

Today we had the opportunity to go to Ocho Rios, a cruise ship town on the north coast. Our team enjoyed God’s creation, shopped, swam, and relaxed after our hard week of ministry. We went to Dunn’s River Falls, a national park which features a gradual waterfall that flows into the ocean. After Dunn’s River we had a wonderful time of debriefing and worship and enjoyed a fine meal overlooking the sea. We’re now back and safe at the Old Harbour Bay Baptist Church and will begin our journey home tomorrow. We’ll post some photos from the last couple days tomorrow!

Finishing strong
by Jon Nelson
June 30, 2012 at 07:56 AM

Our team had a strong finish to their ministry on Thursday. You can see our group working alongside their work leader, Rohan, as they construct a chicken coop for Marsha. Marsha is a church member at Old Harbour Bay Baptist. This little project will provide her with not only food but a source of consistent income as she'll be able to sell the chickens and eggs. Our ministry to the guys at the basketball court finished well also as we established strong connections with some of the young men in the community. One of the guys played on our team yesterday, to the discontent of the other Jamaicans. His step of faith to join our group to play shows the power of the relationships we were able to establish and his boldness to proclaim that he's welcoming of our group, the gospel, and our purpose for being on the island. God has been so good to us this week and we thank him for his blessings. Our team is now on the bus heading to the airport and we'll be arriving home tonight!

Boy's Home
by Jon Nelson
July 1, 2012 at 10:11 AM

Earlier in the week, our team got to visit a boy's home near Old Harbour. Here's a photo of pastor Ken sharing a devotional with the boy's. We had the chance to learn about this unique ministry and spend time playing some football and basketball with the guys. It was a blessing!

We thank God for the ministry FBC Pontotoc has done in Jamaica and will look forward to the future partnership and ministry opportunities between Praying Pelican Missions and First Baptist Church of Pontotoc!
