Here We Come!
by Vickie and Bruce
June 19, 2010 at 07:05 AM

The team left PDX at midnight and is almost here! They arrive at 10:30 Belize time (9:30 Portland time). Plans for the day - picnic lunch in Belize City by the Caribbean, time at the Children's Home and then off to Orange Walk to settle in at the hotel.

Settling In
by Bruce and Vickie
June 19, 2010 at 06:31 PM

The team is here, all 23 of them. They have been traveling since midnight Friday, so they are tired but in good spirits and ready to begin their week here in Belize. After a brief time of playing and loving on the kids at the children’s home in Belize City, we headed by school bus for Orange Walk. Everyone is getting settled in their rooms at the D*Victoria and cooling down after the hot trip north. The team needs to rest as we have a full day tomorrow in Santa Clara. Keep praying!

Sunday in Santa Clara
by Bruce and Vickie
June 20, 2010 at 03:52 PM

The team began the day with John V. preparing eggs to order. He did a great job! We proceeded to the beautiful Gethsemane Baptist Church in the village of Santa Clara. The team took charge of Sunday school for all ages, creating Father’s Day cards for the dads by the preschool and Bible study for the teens and adults. After a great lunch of rice and beans (not to be confused with beans and rice) and Belizean chicken the group headed out in the sweltering heat to visit with people of the village and invite the children to VBS starting tomorrow. Paul is preaching tonight, and most likely Pastor Val will translate into Spanish. Tomorrow will be a busy day as we start building the walls of the hurricane shelter.

First Day of Construction
by Bruce and Vickie
June 22, 2010 at 07:02 AM

It is another hot one here in beautiful downtown Santa Clara. On this bright and sunny day we began laying cement block for the hurricane shelter. Mortar needs to be mixed, blocks moved into position, and scaffolding built as we work our way around the 40 foot by 40 foot building, raising the walls to 9 feet 6 inches. We are grateful for the local workers who help us build it strong and straight. Vacation Bible School got off to a good start with 53 kids from the neighborhood. Songs, stories, and lots of play time filled up our 2 hours quickly. Tomorrow we will do this all over again. Pray for the team’s endurance.

It's "prayers" not "sunshine." Sorry about that!!!

Trek to Cerros Mayan Ruins
by Vickie
June 24, 2010 at 08:55 AM

The team started the day out early yesterday. We travelled by bus to Cerros where we (along with some mosquitoes!) explored Mayan ruins which are situated right on the Caribbean. One bit of excitement along the way was boarding a barge-like ferry which is pulled across a small expanse of water by cable. Then it was off to enjoy some chicken nachos at a nearby restaurant. The team rested by the water, did some kayaking and just enjoyed a lazy hour. We were back to Santa Clara by 3:00 to begin preparation for VBS. Each day the numbers increase. Continue to pray for the team for health, safety and basic protection. God has been faithful to hear and answer our prayers! Check the trip journal tonight for before and after pictures of the hurricane shelter.

Janee for Bruce

Strange but important question. Who was the best man or maid of honor at your wedding?

Janee

What a great job you did making progress on the shelter. And I know those kids just loved you all at the VBS. We are looking forward to having so many of you for VBS here next week. Think how cool (literally) you will feel here! Emily I hear you haven't felt well. So sorry my girl. I know you will be making the best of it. Hang in there and we'll see you tomorrow night. Our prayers continue for all of you!

Griff, Stacy, Alli and Anna

The mayan ruins sounded like they were a lot of fun, and we bet you can't wait for tomorrow when you get to go snorkeling! We miss you a lot =)

Aunt Janet

It has been great to read the journal entries every day and follow along on the schedule we have. So VBS & construction should be done and you all have a day of play tomorrow. Just what you need after your week of hard work. Cool off and enjoy the snorkeling. We keep you all in our prayers as you wrap up your Mission Trip. Congratulations to you all. Can't wait to hear about your experiences, Katie.

carol

by the time you hear this, your work will be done on the shelter. Congrats on a job well done. How wonderful to know you have truly blessed the community with the start of a safe shelter for their residents. Enjoy your beach day Friday, a well deserved ending to a memorable week, I'm sure. Katie, enjoy John's snorkel lessons! Safe travels. See you soon.

So proud of our girls and their friends doing the Lord's work. We pray that the Lord will soften hearts and open minds to His Word. May you all be safe and continue to serve your fellow man. We love you

Eileen

Those walls look straight and the sky looks blue ... both very good things. 'May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; may the Lord look upon you with favor, and grant you peace."

Keri

Hi team! It's so fun to see pictures and hear updates about your day. We are praying you have a great time as you serve. We all miss you here! Hope you had a great Father's Day Paul : )

Grandma and grandpa

Understand it is hot there and our temps in Phoenix are 108 but it is a dry heat so we hear all the time. So glad we are able to read what you are doing each day. what experiences you are having and know you will always remember them. Love to all.

Tami

Love all the updates and photos! Looks hot and humid in Belize. Cool, cloudy still here in Oregon, although the weatherman is promising a glimpse of the sun, then, of course more rain. Enjoy second of this trip you all have worked so hard to earn!!

Stephanie

Love reading the updates! So glad you made it safely to Belize and I pray that the rest of your time there is filled with lots of good experiences! Can't wait to hear all about your trip when you return home!

carol

great to see the group pic and all the sunglasses. Thanks for sending some sunshine our way this week, we love it here. I sent a couple of messages, but used the wrong password, so I think I suggested taking lots of advil and using lots of sunscreen. I know you are a blessing to the folks there, and glad you helped make Father's Day cards (do they celebrate it there or are you starting a new tradition?) and had good attendance at VBS Monday. Hope the cement brigade is a well-oiled machine by now! Katie, the kitties, especially Grizabella, and I miss you. Be open to all of the experiences there and enjoy the hotel A/C and pool.

Dayna

So excited to read your updates each day... Missing my girls!! Will continue to pray for you all! What a blessing you are to the people of Belize!

Janee

Hi Belize Team, You all look wonderful! And look at that sunshine! Please bring it back with you for VBS. We are praying for your strength in the heat, and for joy in your hearts as you serve. Bruce and Vickie, Zulu says "hi". He and Gracie are having a great time! He's being a very good boy.

Paul

Great job, team!

Vickie
