We’ve Made It!

by Elizabeth Thomas | July 27, 2019 10:41 PM

We finally arrived at Clendenin UMC at 6:00pm today after a longgg drive.

God's Masterpiece

by Lara Edgeman | July 27, 2019 10:47 PM

Today, we kicked off our week by going on a stroll through Clendenin. We stopped at the river access to view God's amazing work and watch the beginning of the sunset! We even met some people on the sides of the road who were really welcoming to the incoming group of Pelicans! We are extremely excited for this week and know that God is going to do amazing things in and through us.

Sunday School!

by Lara Edgeman | July 28, 2019 9:06 PM

This morning, we attended Sunday school with Ruth! She gave us the most interesting talk on anger and how to communicate through it. We learned a lot of different tips that we can apply and we had tons of laughs with Ruth! Definitely one of our favorite parts of the day!

Church Time!

by Lara Edgeman | July 28, 2019 9:12 PM

After Sunday school, we attended the service at Clendenin United Methodist Church! Pastor Don gave an amazing message on prayer and how there are no unanswered prayers, just prayers that are answered differently from how we expected. We learned so much and had an amazing conversation about it tonight! We also loved how welcoming and friendly everyone was and fellowshipping with them!

Capitol Market!

by Lara Edgeman | July 28, 2019 9:18 PM

Today after church, we took a group trip to Capitol Market in Charleston. It was so much fun to experience the new culture and a new location! We were able to walk through the outdoor farmer's market, walk through the indoor shops, and even get some great food for lunch there! We stocked up on unique and delicious snacks and fruits and we were super happy with our spontaneous trip to town! We can't wait to get to work tomorrow!

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub!

by Lara Edgeman | July 29, 2019 6:50 PM

Today was Praying Pelican Missions' first time working with Union Missions! We helped by scrubbing down an old kitchen, organizing, and helping with heavy lifting. The kitchen looked so shiny and new when we left and we are so excited to return tomorrow and Wednesday to help with more projects around Union Mission!

Special Treats!

by Lara Edgeman | July 29, 2019 6:54 PM

During our lunch break,  we visited Caffe Romeo in Charleston for a special treat! After having our gelato and amazing iced coffees, we were hyper and ready to get back to work at the Dock for the second half of our day!

Girl POWER!

by Lara Edgeman | July 29, 2019 6:59 PM

For the second half of the day, we worked at the Dock. While most of us sanded and painted almost all of the walls, we had a few of the girls learn how to do the electrical work and wire all of the outlets! Who says girls can't do anything?? We are super proud of how much work we were able to finish at the Dock in just a couple hours and we are excited to see how far we get this week!

You've Got Mail!

by Lara Edgeman | July 30, 2019 3:35 PM

This morning we helped stuff envelopes for Union Mission's regular newsletters. We ended up doubling their regular volunteers and stuffed thousands of newsletters into envelopes. We even finished the full day's job in just a few hours! They also gave us snacks and a really delicious lunch!

Let There Be Light!

by Lara Edgeman | July 30, 2019 3:38 PM

After Union Mission, we headed back to the Dock to paint and do more electrical. We got SO much done! We ended up finishing painting the entire top floor and we even got the lights working! How exciting! Tomorrow we hope to paint the staircase, bathroom, and the downstairs rooms.

Hacksaw Adventure

by Jillian O'Connor | July 31, 2019 2:41 PM

Today while working at the Dock, Aaron asked Clairee and I to Hacksaw. Unsure what that meant, we jumped at the chance to try something new. We struggled insanely at first (pictured here), taking us almost 3 people and a new location to finish one rod. Finally, we got the hang of it and were able to finish the rest of them in the time it took us to hacksaw just one! Overall, it was a fun experience! Plus, now we know how to hacksaw!

Union Mission Day 3!

by Lara Edgeman | July 31, 2019 3:32 PM

Today, a group of us went back to finish scrubbing the industrial kitchen at Union Mission while the other group of us helped Michael scrub the men's dorms in the Men's Shelter. We ended up finishing cleaning all of the men's dorms so they are ready for the new incomers next week!

A Visit To The Capitol!

by Lara Edgeman | July 31, 2019 3:35 PM

Today after lunch, we took a small girl's trip to the Capitol! It was fun to see the construction being done on the gold dome and to get our picture taken with Lincoln himself!

Thrift Shop!

by Lara Edgeman | August 1, 2019 2:41 PM

Today, part of our group went to the Union Mission Thrift Store to help clean and organize. We organized, hung up clothing, cleaned, and mopped the floors. After this week, we can now say we are professionals at mopping floors! We also got to do a little shopping ourselves and stock up on cute sweatshirts while also supporting local charity!

What Do We Do? - We Trim!

by Lara Edgeman | August 1, 2019 2:46 PM

This morning, a few of us went to visit a close friend named Shirley! Shirley is so sweet and she tells amazing stories of the flood, her grandkids, and her husband's time in World War II. She also gave us some drinks, danishes, and cupcakes! After sitting and talking for a little while, we went outside and got an arm workout as we trimmed and weeded her bushes for her! They looked so good after we cut them and ripped all of the vines out!

Move In Day!

by Lara Edgeman | August 1, 2019 2:56 PM

After lunch, we all joined back together to go to Daunley's apartment and help Mrs. Marvine clean the apartment out so Daunley could move! We loaded up all of his belongings into bags and boxes and then unloaded everything at the new location. We also scrubbed and mopped the old apartment so it would be clean after he moved.
