Jamaican jerk dinner

by Rachel Turnquist | July 16, 2016 9:29 AM

The team enjoyed some down time swimming in the pool at the hotel we stayed at before going to scotchies for dinner! Everyone got to enjoy an incredible jerk chicken/ pork with festivals while watching the sun set over the ocean. Such a great way to be welcomed to jamaica!

westhaven children's home

by Rachel Turnquist | July 17, 2016 7:23 AM

The team had a great first day spending the morning at westhaven children's home! They were able to create new friendships with the residents there! The team had a blast going on walk, singing songs, helping with breakfast, coloring pictures and blowing bubbles! It was such a great way to kick off our week!

Hastings Baptist Church

by Rachel Turnquist | July 17, 2016 5:48 PM

To kick off our day we headed to Hastings Baptist Church for an amazing service!! Our very own Miah played drums for us, while Trish a Praying Pelican staffer led the worship service! It was amazing! We took a short break for Sunday school. Everyone was gathered by age group to an area where they disused different topics and learned a memory verse. Everyone regrouped for the reading, read by Khody (pslams 4: 6-12) and the message which was given to us by Youth Pastor James Owen from Wesley Monumental UMC (the church we are serving with this week from Gerogia). Pastor Owens spoke about pride, it was amazing! God is SO good!

a feast for a king

by Rachel Turnquist | July 17, 2016 5:56 PM

Lunch today was held at the church and will continue to be there each afternoon. I've been on this island for almost 2 months now and I have NOT eaten like this before! We had fresh fruit spreads, two salads on top of potato salad and noodle salad. Not to mention the protien, fish, pork and chicken! To wash it down we got fantastic HOMEMADE fruit punch! Oh I almost forgot the cake and ice cream we received as dessert!! Needless to say we will most likely be going home with a little more fluff then when we arrived!

Beach break

by Rachel Turnquist | July 18, 2016 4:49 PM

We arrived at the infirmary a little earlier than planned so we took a half hour beach break!

falmouth infirmary visit

by Rachel Turnquist | July 18, 2016 4:54 PM

We spent just over an hour visiting with some incredible people at the falmouth infirmary! It was so amazing to walk around and see each one of the team members diving into conversations with the residents. Many read the bible to them of sang some songs. Everytime I turned around a Kaylee was reading the Bible to a new resident! It was so heart warming to hear some specific stories from Brett and Tammy during our meeting too!

G.R.A.C.E.

by Rachel Turnquist | July 18, 2016 5:13 PM

God's riches at Christ's expense! Each night we will hear from wither Pastor Jon or Pastor James. Last night Pastor Jon shared with us one heck of a message! Jon is a youth pastor for a reason let me tell you! He did a fabulous job comparing our lives today to the word of God. Verse 2 touches on same love, fittingly Jamaicans live life according to the phrase one love.

Packin'

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:04 PM

You can learn a lot of things from hanging out with a bunch of nortern folks from MI, such as how to "pack". I'm not very good at it yet, but I'm working on it! Packing has become so big that we pack instead of clap after each God Moment during our nightly meetings. Packing also made has caused us to make intense deals over snacks (khody).

first day of work

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:09 PM

The team did AMAZING on their first day of work at Hastings Baptist Church. None of us could believe how much work they actually got done! We shouldn't have been that surprised giving a bunch of Midwesterners shovels and asking them to work! The team dug out many buckets filled with rocks so that they were able to pour concrete for bathroom floors. God was incredible too (as per usual) with keeping the weather chill and holding the massive rain storm until 10 minutes after we had cleaned up and finished work for the day before lunch!

VBS day 1

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:11 PM

The team had a blast running a VBS for the local kids in the community of Wakefield at Hastings Baptist after lunch. About 25 kids and teens showed up! The team lead them in song, bible stories, crafts and games!

Zoomers and Strawberry Chikys

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:13 PM

The team has very much enjoyed trying new jamaican foods! I love being able to see there faces when they get the pick out one salty and one sweet snack each night!

hi ho it's off to work we go

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:19 PM

This morning after breakfast we headed back to the church so we could start on another full day of concrete work. The team dug up some over grown plants to make room a new sidewalk. They also are mixed more concrete to finish a room and the hallway of the bathrooms. It's been incredible to be able to continue the work of pervious praying pelican mission groups here at Hastings Baptist! Hearing Pastor Brown talk about how hateful he is for the mission teams from PPM that serve at his church is amazing. It really goes to show you how creating long term relationships with partners can make a huge impact!

Round two

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 7:31 PM

Our final day of two for VBS was a major success! At least 35 kids came to learn about the Lord and it was great! The team did a similar rutine of songs, stories, crafts and games. It was so much fun to watch them make new friends with the local kids. It was a huge heart ache to have to say goodbye to our new friends.

Jon's story

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:14 PM

We were honored to be able to hear from Jon Wenzle last night! It took some begging from PJ and I before Jon reluctantly gave in but JON BLEW US ALL OUT OF THE WATER! Hearing his story was so amazing! Spoiler alert: the moral of his testament was to not ignore God's will for us. Eventually He will get you to where you are supposed to be and you will be doing the great things that God has planned for your life. You WILL do LIFE CHANGING THINGS in the name of the LORD Jon! I can't wait to see how God uses you since you have accepted His plans and let yourself be second.

DJ Dillon and the Funky Bunch

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:22 PM

This morning was a rough one for most. Many of us woke up feeling like our energy level was in the negatives.. but God is so powerful! DJ Dillon from Praying Pelican Missions got the bus poppin' on our way to the church. The amount of energy God put into Dillon this morning filled everyone up so that they were able to have a full day of ministry once again. Dillon played all sorts of music, the bus was what they call "lit".

back to buisness

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:28 PM

It was a long and hard day of work. Jon W, Tyler, Nathan and Khody went to a house near by that Wesley Monumental UMC were working on to help finish their roof project. The rest of the group continued to work hard and work together to finish the concrete side walk! Mind you concrete work here is a lot different from back home. Instead of having a semi with mixed concrete we must full many many half buckets of dirt, then rocks and finally concrete mix before adding water and mixing it all together with shovels. It was a lot hotter today, and the work was extra tough, since we had to eye ball the amount of concrete so we didn't over mix and that caused us to mix twice. Everyone did a super job!!

pew naps

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:30 PM

Many enjoyed a pew nap after completing the work project before lunch!

mosaic magic

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:43 PM

Hastings Baptist is filled with many old stained glass windows. Some of the broken ones were sitting g outside waiting to be disguarded. We had a great idea of making a mosaic sign from the stained glass that said "Hastings Baptist Church". The pastors wife Mrs. Brown LOVED the idea! The church will be celebrating their 175 years next year so to have original stained glass art work was so meaingful. This is a picture of Mrs. Brown reacting to the sign. She was almost in tears! The kids really had to use their patience when piecing together the letters. Thank the Lord no one was cut on the glass. And a shout out to Ariah for stenciling out the words for the sign twice!

Not goodbye, but see you later

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 9:52 PM

After four days of serving at Hastings Baptist by helping to complete the concrete floor work and also provide a VBS we were thrown a celebration party! It was incredible our feast was somehow even bigger than what we have been getting (I still don't know how). The kids from VBS as well as our glorious cooks and host Pastor sang us a thank you and farewell song. Needless to say the amount of love that was showered on us this week from the members of Wakefield community and Hastings Baptist Church were far greater than even imagined. When we are united in Christ incredible things will happen. We witnessed that first hand.
Not goodbye, but see you later

Robin's Nest

by Rachel Turnquist | July 20, 2016 10:31 PM

The team took a long drive full of unbelievable views to a children's home called Robin's Nest! Though the drive was long and potty breaks were needed everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It's children's home full of love and hard working pod mom's as they are called. The kids there ere excited to see the team and enjoyed jumping on the trampoline and playing basketball with them. I heard many mind blowing comments about the breath taking views of the mountains, Montego Bay and the ocean. Not to mention how happy, adorable and playful the kids were.

rec day fun

by Rachel Turnquist | July 23, 2016 8:24 AM

The team enjoyed their tourist time shopping at the craft market. Once everyone was done shopping we headed over to Dolphins Cove to enjoy time in the beach, snorkling, holding many different animals, enjoying boat rides and much more! It was a great way to wrap up an amazing week!!

almond tree

by Rachel Turnquist | July 23, 2016 8:26 AM

After a long day of fun we got to have a pasta feast at almond tree restaurant! As we watched a beautiful sunset we were able to have worship and a final week reflection on the water. GOD IS SO GOOD!

safe back home

by Rachel Turnquist | July 23, 2016 8:28 AM

I received a video of khody packing, so I know the team has landed safely! Thank you to each one of you for allowing God to give you a new perspective as well as grow in your faith. Jamaica misses you and so do I! One Love ?
