Tips for Sharing Your Testimony

No matter the ministries you are active in on your mission trip, you will be involved in building relationships with those in the community the entire week! One of the best ways to prepare your team to serve is by asking them to develop their testimony in a way that can be shared with those you meet. During one of your team meetings, consider taking time to form and practice sharing testimonies. We believe in the power of connection and sharing our stories to grow in unity. Testimonies are so powerful, sharing our stories allows us to paint a picture of how God has been and currently is at work in our lives!

You can share:

  • Where you grew up/your youth and perspective of Christ/Christianity
  • How you came to know and follow Jesus
  • God’s hand at work during specific moments of your own life and your walk with Jesus since you came to know Him

Practice your testimony ahead of time to be ready to share should the opportunity present itself. As we reveal ourselves to others, they often feel comfortable in revealing themselves to us. This can open the door to deeper conversations and questions.

Some tips as you prepare:

  • Write down your testimony or atleast, guideposts for your story. You may not stick exactly to it, but it will help you form the flow of how you want to share your story.
  • Think of ways to relate to those you are going to serve. Are there some areas of need in the community that the host partner has alerted you to? Maybe there’s a time in your life where you experienced something similar.
  • Will you need a translator to share your story in your host community? Practice short, simple phrases to help your translator easily communicate with those you meet. Remember - speak complete thoughts before pausing, when speaking through a translator.
  • While there are moments where you will only have a moment to share, or times when you can really expound on your testimony, practice a testimony about 5-7 minutes in length.

At team meetings, plan some time to share testimonies in front of one another. Not only is it good practice, you may learn a lot about those you are going to serve alongside.
