PPM Disaster Response: Tornado rips through Houston area

Want Info?

Just before 3 PM central on Tuesday, January 23rd of 2023, a large and extremely dangerous tornado ripped through the southeast Houston suburbs of Pasadena and Deer Park, on Tuesday. Praying Pelican Missions is actively serving alongside the local church in those two communities. The tornado has been rated at least an EF-2, according to officials. The majority of the storm damage was focused in the Pasadena area, but some areas in Deer Park were equally affected according to one of our Pastors at Lifebridge Baptist Church. He reported that many trees and branches were down, vehicles were tossed about, hundreds of homes lost power, and buildings were ripped to shreds, just to name a few.

While we praise God that no fatalities have been reported, according to Pastor Brandon from Deer Park, it will take several months to clean up and repair the structures that have been damaged.

Follow God's lead

by Almando Jean Louis | January 26, 2023 6:15 PM

We stopped and helped a family that was hauling branches from their back yard to the curb. We then spent some time praying with them.

It was a good way to end the day.

Some took a direct hit and recovery will take longer for them.

Lots to be done

It will take a while for some to get back to normal.

Entire community crushed

While some communities are intact, some communities are completely crushed. We drove through a community where every house was affected in a way or another.

Acting fast

Those who are able are acting quick with roof repairs before the rain comes.

Think of when the rush is over.

by Almando Jean Louis | January 26, 2023 4:11 PM

The reason why Praying Pelican Missions believes in local pastors and churches is because they know how to best serve their communities in times of crisis like this.

It was very encouraging to sit and chat, and pray with one of our pastors in Deer Park. As I was chatting with him, his phone kept ringing over and over, and he mentioned that he had to ask his wife to pray for him because he has been overwhelmed.

For the most part, it will appear that everyone is taken care of with all the trucks and companies that are out cutting trees, hauling debris, and fixing some properties. However, when the rush is over, there will still be some people in dire need, some families who were no insured will remain untouched. There will still be much to be done, even behind the fences. And that is when the church will continue to intervene and assist with the long-term recovery.

I love how he already has a plan to continue to reach out to his community when the rush is over.

We are looking forward to assisting him and his church in their efforts.

Opportunities in the crisis

Many fences came down and some ripped apart completely. I heard someone say "sometimes fences need to come down so people can meet their neighbors".

Much to be done

Some structures took a much bigger hit than others.

It was a strong tornado!

by Almando Jean Louis | January 26, 2023 2:57 PM

The way the church sign is torn testifies of what a 200+ MPH wind can do.

Praise God the church building is safe.

The city at work

by Almando Jean Louis | January 26, 2023 2:49 PM

We met with pastor Brandon this morning. He confirmed that the city is doing an amazing job intervening and removing debris and trees from people's yards.

It's encouraging to see.

Roof pieces in trees

While some areas look fine, you can definitely see where the path of the tornado was in some other areas.

Piles of wood

by Almando Jean Louis | January 26, 2023 1:06 PM

All along the street where Lifebridge Baptist Church is, we could see down trees and branches. Some of those trees fell on vehicles and houses causing substantial damage to them.

It's good to see volunteers and local companies involving in the clean up process.

Complete loss

While some houses sustained very little damage some were completely destroyed by the tornado. Praise God everyone was safe!
